The Heritage and Philosophy of Axis JiuJitsu Yamba.

At Axis JiuJitsu Yamba, we are part of a well-established lineage in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, tracing back to some of the most influential figures in the sport. Our academy is built on a solid foundation of self defence principles, with values and training concepts passed down through generations of dedicated practitioners.

Origin: A Legacy from Japan.

Our roots can be traced to Axis Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Japan, one of the country’s pioneering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools. Founded in 1997 by Takamasa Watanabe, a black belt under Rickson Gracie, the academy was originally known as Gracie Japan before evolving into Axis Jiu-Jitsu. Watanabe played a key role in introducing and developing Jiu-Jitsu in Japan, staying true to the principles he learned under Rickson Gracie’s guidance. His approach emphasized efficiency, connection, and control— concepts that continue to influence students worldwide.

Through Jason Roebig, the Axis Jiu-Jitsu lineage was introduced to Australia. A highly respected black belt, Jason was promoted by both Takamasa Watanabe and Kron Gracie, blending the technical knowledge passed down from two influential figures in the sport. His encounter with Rickson Gracie, arranged by Watanabe, had a lasting impact on his approach to Jiu-Jitsu, deepening his understanding of structure, breathwork, and control.

Today, Jason Roebig serves as Rickson Gracie’s official representative in Australia, teaching from his premier Academy, the Axis Of Excellence in QLD. Ensuring that Rickson’s philosophy remains at the core of his teachings, his emphasis on fundamental techniques, pressure-based control, and efficient movement continues to inspire a new generation of practitioners.

In 2024, Jason’s student, Nathan Rheinberger - the head coach & owner of BJJ Yamba, was promoted to black belt & continues to teach the “Invisible JiuJitsu” that was passed down from Professor Jason Roebig, to Nathan’s students here at Axis JiuJitsu Yamba.

In 2025, we rebranded to Axis JiuJitsu Yamba, to honour our lineage & stay connected to our roots. We are committed to preserving and sharing this deep lineage by offering high-level Jiu-Jitsu instruction in our little surf town, Yamba NSW.
